- Analyze two major debates (see textbook Chapter 7, Section 7.4) by which the Constitution was created in the summer of 1787.
- Discuss the ratification process of the Constitution of 1787.
- How did ratification lead to the formation of America’s first two political parties, the Federalists and Anti-Federalists?
- What were the major differences between the Federalists and Anti-Federalists, and who were the best-known members of each party?

Hello professor and class,
Two of the most influential debates during the Constitutional Convention involved legislative representation and the status of enslaved individuals. The Great Compromise resolved conflict between larger states favoring population-based representation and smaller states desiring equal representation by creating a dual-chamber legislature. The House of Representatives would reflect state populations, while each state would have equal representation in the Senate. Another contentious debate was resolved through the Three-Fifths Compromise, which allowed a portion of enslaved individuals to count toward state populations for both representation and taxation purposes (Vile, 2012).
